SGPA formula
The semester grade point average (SGPA) is the weighted mean of all courses in a single academic term:
Where:
- gradei = grade points earned in course i
- crediti = credit weight assigned to course i
- n = number of courses in the semester
Learn exactly how to capture every course, convert grade scales, and read SGPA versus CGPA outputs. Use this guide when you need more than the quick start tips on the homepage.
Understand the weighted-average logic behind SGPA and CGPA so you can sanity-check the calculator manually.
The semester grade point average (SGPA) is the weighted mean of all courses in a single academic term:
Where:
The cumulative grade point average (CGPA) combines all semesters by weighting each SGPA with the credits earned in that term:
Where:
Assume one semester with three courses on the 10-point scale:
| Course | Credits | Letter grade | Grade points | Weighted score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Structures | 4 | A | 8 | 4 × 8 = 32 |
| Advanced Calculus | 5 | A+ | 9 | 5 × 9 = 45 |
| Academic Writing | 3 | B+ | 7 | 3 × 7 = 21 |
| Total | 12 | - | - | 98 |
Calculation:
SGPA = (32 + 45 + 21) ÷ 12 = 98 ÷ 12 = 8.17
Gather every course you plan to include along with credit values and the grades awarded. Convert percentages to the letter grade your institution recognizes.
Press "Add Semester" for each term, rename it so the timeline is clear, and enter every course with its credit weight. The calculator totals credits automatically.
Toggle between 10-point and 4-point scales to match your university or preview how your CGPA appears on another scale. Existing grades convert instantly.
Each semester card shows SGPA and earned credits. The summary section combines every term to display overall CGPA so you can confirm graduation eligibility or scholarship targets.
Enter credits and grades below to see how the calculator weights each course to produce the semester SGPA.
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microprocessors | 4 | A+ | 10 |
| Signals & Systems | 3 | A | 9 |
| Numerical Methods | 3 | B+ | 8 |
| Professional Ethics | 2 | O | 10 |
Weighted points: (4 × 10) + (3 × 9) + (3 × 8) + (2 × 10) = 102. Credits: 12. SGPA = 102 ÷ 12 ≈ 8.50.
Combine SGPA results across terms to confirm the cumulative GPA math before you enter your own history.
| Term | Credits earned | SGPA | Weighted points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | 20 | 8.2 | 20 × 8.2 = 164 |
| Semester 2 | 18 | 7.8 | 18 × 7.8 = 140.4 |
| Total | 38 | - | 304.4 |
CGPA = (164 + 140.4) ÷ 38 = 304.4 ÷ 38 ≈ 8.01. Switching the calculator to the 4-point scale surfaces the equivalent ≈ 3.3.
You can print the page or copy the summary numbers into a spreadsheet. Export automation is on the roadmap, but the current tool keeps data private on your device.
If the course does not carry grade points, leave the grade blank so it will not affect your CGPA. Add a note beside the course title if you want to remember that it was pass/fail.
Use the grade scale selector inside the calculator to match your university's system, then pick the closest letter grade. If your transcript lists percentages, rely on the official conversion chart from your registrar so the grade points reflect school policy.
Enter the version of the course that counts toward your official GPA. Many universities exclude the earlier attempt, so remove it or set its credits to zero if the registrar replaces the grade.
GPA typically refers to a single term or academic year, whereas CGPA averages every completed semester using credit-weighted SGPA values. Use CGPA when applications request your cumulative standing across your entire program.
